Hi, I just ran across your blog and love some of the ideas you offer, but regarding your expresso addiction... Do you know that a 6 cup italian stovetop bialetti (or equivalent) expresso machine will cost you about 10$ at your local walmart or target or whatever? If you heat up 500 ml of milk in the Microwave and add your 6 cups of homemade expresso to it each morning, JUST IMAGINE how much money you can SAVE!

(and it's really REALLY good...)

Hi!
What a surprise Bertolli's offering in the US. In Italy, we just have Bertolli oil.

Anyway, here there are two healthy, cheap suggestions from Italy. The first one is an home made pizza. You just need flour, yeast, salt, water, tomato and cheese and I'm sure you will pay less than 5$ for much bigger pizza slices including a delicious smell in your kitchen.

The second one is a home made cous cous. Very quick and easy to prepare with the ingredients you prefer (meat or fish plus vegetables).
Here it is the recipe in my space... it is in Italian, but perhaps you know Italian. Anyway, I've posted some pictures too.

you know, I'm following your blog that I find day by day more actual and interesting :-) I hope it does not bother you if I post my comments from time to time.

I don't know why you lost 6 jobs over 11 years. I can only assume it.

A younger person is paid less than an experienced employee. Professionality is no longer as important as in the past.
In Italy, we see an increasing gap between "secretarial office positions" (sorry, I don't know the right adjective in English) and managerial positions. I.e. a young graduate girl is preferred to a 40 years old experienced office manager or financial controller to cover the same position.
It does not matter if the young graduate has no experience at all, she is preferred. In 10-15 years, a younger graduate will be preferred to her and so on. It's only a matter of surviving and does not allow mosquitos to eat you (literal translation of an Italian motto).

I'm enroled in linkedin.com. I like this website, especially the Questions&Answer tool. But there are also many job places offers. If you are already enroled, you know it. If you need the invitation, write me. I think it worth a surf.

I'm very sorry for your job, but don't give up! You should write a manual about your suggestions and be paid for that!
Today, I've done some Christmas shopping too. I was in the area where Parmisan cheese is produced. I bought a 30 months ripened cheese for 1 euro / Kg. A bairgain. I will give one 1 kg cheese per each family plus a bottle of wine. Nothing more.

My name is Isabella and I write from Italy.
I enjoy your blog. A lot. It describes a world that I don't know.
Economic situation in Europe is not nice as well. And forecast for next two years (at least) are not positive at all.
That's the reason why we are trying to save money too, more than in the past.
But probably in a different way respect in the US.
I've never been in the US so I don't know the typical lifestyle apart from the messages we receive through movies and magazines. What hit me most reading your blog, is that you never talk about the cost of water, energy, heating, phone. But you talk a lot about saving on food (including eating out) or e-shopping. We are not used to e-shopping at all and instead of going out for dinner, we prefer cooking and invite friends at home.
I will go on reading your blog. Pls, continue writing, because it is very interesting.
